Trieste, Italy 1950-1953
Prior to our arrival in Trieste, we lived in Alexandria, Virginia where mom was exposed in a negative way to the McCarthy era. On the other hand, I had a great time and I was even on the Howdy Doody show.
When we moved to Trieste, Italy Dad's task was to familiarize himself with the city, the refugee situation (thousands of refugees from Russia had fled to Trieste after the war), and the Communist Party Headquarters.
During our stay Mom and I were evacuated during the Trieste riots (the first and only time were separated in our lives).
Dad was also involved in creating a stay-behind network which was part of a super secret army network to prevent any Communist take over.
